Kimono Workshop at Anderson School

In New York public elementary schools, the 3rd  graders study
cultural diversity.  As a part of Japanese cultural study, I have
been invited every year by Anderson School in Upper Westside
to give a Yukata workshop.
The menu is:
1. Brief Power Point Presentation about the history of kimono
and all types of kimono
2. Furisode (long sleeved formal kimono) dressing
demonstration. (a teacher as a mode)
3. Yukata (casual cotton kimono for summer) dressing
demonstration (a boy and a girl as models)
4. Group work (Dressing Yukata and Obi to each other)
We had 3 classes in the morning, 45 min. each.
Students were very enthusiastic, curious and creative. It was
fun!!  We also try to find the answer together to the question
that why kimono is not daily cloth anymore, but why it is still
beloved by Japanese people as a special costume.
